Are big ideas relevant anymore?
Ideas solve problems. And the more complicated the advertising and marketing industry becomes, the more problems there are to solve.

What role does technology play in the future? Does the future belong to specialists or generalists?
Technology doesn’t replace an idea. People never went to the cinema to just admire 35mm film either; they went for the story. Ideas create the audience.

Is the recession feeding creativity?
A recession just makes more problems that need to be solved. The biggest enemy of a great idea is fear - but fear is there with or without a recession.

Do award shows matter any more, and who is qualified to judge work?
Highlighting great work shows what’s possible. It turns the fear of doing into the fear of not doing. I think the best judges make the most terrifying work.

What keeps you up at night?
I once watched a badly disabled man steer his electric wheelchair halfway down a public swimming pool ramp. He then struggled to get his inflatable life ring from the back of the chair and wrestle his contorted, crippled body into the child-like floating device. Over 2 hours later, he finally leant forward and threw himself into the water. Then drifted. Free. I often think about that.
